A domestic
company succeeded in localizing synthetic quartz glass materials that Japan has
monopolized and mass-producing them.
It is
expected that the import substitution effect of the semiconductor and display
quartz glass markets will be great.
STI (CEO
Seo Tae-il) announced on 19th Feb 2020 that it has developed synthetic quartz
glass materials and succeeded in mass production
through
industry-academic-research technology development projects in collaboration
with the Korea Institute of Ceramic Engineering & Technology (Director Yoo
Kwang-soo).
STI
developed manufacturing technology and production equipment for synthetic
quartz glass materials
by applying optical preform fiber manufacturing equipment,
technology, and special construction methods with the Korea Institute of
Ceramic Engineering & Technology.
In particular, it is possible to control
the physical properties of synthetic quartz glass by developing a gas mixer.
It
is expected that it will be possible to manufacture in the shape of glass
plates or tubes in the future.
The
developed synthetic quartz glass material can be applied to various industries
such as national defense
and aerospace as well as materials for process parts
such as EUV semiconductor photomasks, process jigs, and substrates.
"Since the
domestic market for quartz glass for semiconductors and displays reached 1.16
trillion won in 2018,
this localization will have a huge import substitution
effect", said Lee Ga-Hyung, head of STI Research Institute.
